MAC Style Black Collection Review

MAC's Style Black is a one-of-a-kind collection that is not for the faint of heart. It consists mainly of black hues that are perfect for creating dark smoky eyes to modern goth looks. Although some of these products may seem a little intimidating, the intensity of the color depends on application. Originally I wasn't going to use anything from this collection because the colors were too dark for me, but since my daughter volunteered to let me apply the makeup on her face, I thought I would give it a try. So we decided to have some fun recreating some of the promo images from this collection. Take a look....

FYI: I am not a makeup artist, just a mom having fun with makeup.

Because we didn't have "Black Knight" - the cremesheen lipstick of the Style Black collection - we had to make due with "Faultlessly F/w" from MAC Trend F/W '09 collection. Faultlessly F/w is a "blackened blue violent (amplified)." We then applied "Blackware" glimmerglass for added color and shine. Blackware is described as a creamy true black. Don't be afraid to use this as it is kind of sheer. The added glimmer/sparkle makes the color pop.

We also did one look using the mattene lipstick in "Midnight Media", which is a black matte color. This is a semi-matte lipstick that goes on so smoothly. Feels creamy and silky on the lips. Just remember, when wearing a dark color like Midnight Media, your teeth are going to look yellow. That is more scary looking than the black lipstick itself!!! lol

On the cheeks, we used "Bone Beige/Emphasize" sculpt and shape powder (shown below) from MAC DSquared². This powder shows up well on fair to light skin and does a good job of subtly defining the cheekbones.

For the nails, we used the Nail Lacquer in "Nocturnelle". I wasn't too crazy about the formula since it required numerous coats before appearing smooth rather than streaky. I tend to shy away from dark colors on my fingernails. I prefer to use them on my toes.

2ND LOOK

For this look, we first applied the "Bat Black" Creme Colour Base to the lids and then applied "Blue Flame" mineralize eyeshadow on top. We lined the eyes with the Greasepaint Stick in Intense Black. This versatile waterproof liner, once it's applied, it will not budge. You do however have time to smudge it out for a smoky eye, but you have to work fast before it dries.

"Bat Black" is described as a "blackened burgundy with pink pearl," and "Blue Flame" is called a "mineralize black with blue pearl (frost)."

In another look we did, which didn't turn out so good, we tried the "Cinderfella" mineralize eye shadow and really loved how it looked over the Bat Black creme colour base. These mineralized eye shadows are so lightweight and easy to work with.

On the lips, we used "Viva Glam VI" lipstick (which is not a part of MAC Style Black) and "Black Fire" glimmerglass. "Black Fire" glimmerglass is a "sheer black with pinkish purple pearl," which applied very clearly.

Young Punk and Guilt by Association are two of the other mineralize eye shadows in the Black Style Collection. Gilt by Association is a gorgeous soft subtle black color with gold shimmer. This one is my favorite out of all four.
Young Punk is a soft subtle black with pink/purple shimmer. Another winner and my second favorite.

Overall we had a lot of fun playing with this collection. I will say this though ... you know the saying "you can't judge a book by it's cover"? Need I say more?
