Creating the Hair Look for Missoni S/S ‘12


The Look:  Spanish Harlem
The starting point for the inspiration behind the Missoni S/S12 Collection was a dance track with suggestive beats and sexually-charged vocals. This influence was evident in the slightly clubby, Balearic feel of the clothing, which featured a vibrant palette of canary yellow, aquamarine, hot pink and peach applied to classic Missoni prints and embellished with subtle iridescent finishes. 
The hair look created by Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Wella Professionals, Care and Styling, sought to play against the romance and refinement of the clothing: “I wanted to create tension between the hair and the clothing, to inject it with a rawness that would capture the passion and sensuality of a beautiful young Missoni woman at the end of a hot summer night. So I took the idea of a traditional, slick Spanish look with a perfect side-parting and hair smoothed back over the ears and sculpted into a neat bun, and deconstructed it to create a ‘roughed up’, disheveled effect and a slightly dirtier end-of-the-night texture.” said Eugene.
Get the Look:




1.       Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, and apply Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to wet hair before blow drying hair straight and smooth using a round brush, without creating volume. For hair in need of an extra moisturising boost, like that of models at Fashion Week, try using Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturising Treatment once a week.

2.       Rub Wella Professionals Rugged Fix Matte Molding Crème between your palms and fingers and squash into the roots of your hair all over to create a slightly matted textured effect.

3.       Next, apply Wella Professionals Flowing Form Smoothing Balm to set the natural movement and texture, blasting the roots with a hairdryer to help absorb the product making it invisible.

4.       Although the end look is slightly dishevelled it’s important to start with a neat side-parting, so use a sectioning comb to create this before using your hands to pull the hair back roughly into a ponytail at the nape of the neck, covering the ears. Don’t worry if the hair is not perfectly smooth as the beauty of this look is in the imperfection. In fact, if you massage the hair with your fingers to create more volume and texture, this will add to the overall look.

5.       Next, take the ponytail, loop it back on itself and tie it into the base of the original ponytail to create a bun loop in the hair, with the rest of the of ponytail falling free.   

6.       Now use irons to straighten the loose ends of hair and add a light mist of Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray to create a slightly drier, rougher texture.

7.       Finally, decorative hair combs specially created by Missoni and featuring a snake motif in colours matching the Collection were placed in the back of the hair above the bun loop.

BACKSTAGE WITH PAT MCGRATH AT DOLCE&GABBANA:  MILAN FASHION WEEK



(Milan, Italy - September 2011) – At the Dolce&Gabbana Spring/Summer 2012 Ready to Wear show in Milan, Dolce&Gabbana presents a collection that evokes indulgent culinary culture and the joyful Italian spirit. Mediterranean traditions were reflected in the hot red pepper prints, the pasta adorned accessories, and the crochet fabric in pastel shades perfectly reflected embellished table cloths seen at the Italian indulgent food festival.





Backstage, the Designers’ inspiration of exuberant Italian sensuality was beautifully brought to life by Pat McGrath for Dolce&Gabbana Make Up using the vibrant and intense shades of the new Passion Duo Lipstick and Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation to create impeccably flawless and radiant complexions. Vivid green and intensepurple nails depict ripe courgettes, and mouth watering aubergines.


“This season we were inspired by the charm and beauty of Southern Italy; the food, the smells and the sense of occasion. After all this is at the very heart of our culture and heritage and is so dear to us.” says Domenico Dolce. “This collection symbolizes our love for the Mediterranean spirit; from the distinctive illuminations that adorn every street and the fragrances and tastes of Mediterranean food. We see this as true Italian beauty,” agrees Stefano Gabbana.


The look created by Pat McGrath backstage brought the Designers’ love for traditional Italian cuisine and heritage to life in a way that was effortlessly glamorous, and completely embodied the sensual Italian spirit.




Using the Dolce&Gabbana Make Up Foundation Brush Pat applied small amounts of Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation to the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. She then blended the foundation moving from the center of the face outwards to create a flawless base. Next using the Blush in Provocative and Rose, Pat created a warm and radiant glow by sweeping it over the apples of the cheeks.


On the eyes the Eyeshadow Quad in Femme Fatale was applied to create a sultry sophisticated look. Eye pencils in shades of black and rich coffee were then applied on the lids of the eyes to create definition and to make eyes pop. Finally Pat used the Secret Eyes Mascara in Black to create a gorgeous fluttering veil of volumized lashes.


On the lips Pat applied the new Passion Duo lipsticks using both Imperial and Sensation to create a gorgeously sexy full lip with an amazing blend of vibrant, moisturizing pigment and sheer gloss.


Pat used two nail colours for the show; the deep, rich Dahlia and a Wild green shade. Both with a luxurious matte finish, these colours are tipped to be must haves for SS12.


Pat McGrath explained: “I just love how the simple yet chic make up look we have created complements the stunning SS12 catwalk collection. I love the references to food in the collection and how the make up look accompanies this; plump red tomato lips, deep aubergine and fresh green nails looked amazing and using the new Creamy Foundation and Passion Duo shades was so exciting and really enhanced the look we were trying to achieve. The signature Dolce&Gabbana inspiration and heritage was again ever present on the catwalk, and I feel the vivid yet sophisticated make upreally worked to bring the whole collection to life.
